Third graders are introduced to the use of glyphs and relief carving by Mesoamerican cultures. They complete worksheets, view PowerPoint presentations, participate in a Webquest and create an original glyph carving in sandstone.

In this March glyph worksheet, students color the bubble letters in the word March according to the provided directions. Results will vary with each student.

For this glyph (a pictorial form of data collection), students are given the word "vote" and are asked to show their responses to 4 questions about voting by following the given directions, which include coloring.

Students recognize and use the word "symbol" and create a glyph using symbols about themselves. The reverse of the Texas quarter serves as inspiration for this lesson.
