Lesson Plan

The Hot in the Cold

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Turn up the heat with these lesson plans! Class members have a chance to model molecules in different states of matter, observe demonstrations of different types of heat transfer, and perform an activity exploring heat transfer in lab groups. They then use Excel and Word programs to graph and write up their findings.

Instructional Ideas
  • Have learners brainstorm additional examples of conduction, radiation, and convection.
  • If there is time, lab groups could predict how data would change if hotter and/or colder water was used in the activity, and then test their predictions

Classroom Considerations
  • The resource suggests using matches in a demonstration, but toothpicks (also mentioned) are a safer option
  • If computers are not available in the classroom, instruct students to develop graphs and lab reports instead
Pros
  • Approaches subject with a variety of instructional techniques
  • Hands-on activity keeps learners engaged
Cons
  • None
